As a filmmaker, I spend a lot of time working on audio – cleaning it up, making it sound better, and trying to match the quality of video with high quality audio. But sometimes it is hard or impossible to record great audio. I was shooting a wedding last week and during the reception speeches, the DJ didn’t have the input I needed to plug in my Zoom H4N. So, I ended up just recording the audio by pointing my microphone at the speaker. Unfortunately, because of the size of the room I ended up with echoey audio (audio with a lot of reverb).
When I got into post-production, the audio had too much reverb for my own taste. So I had to figure out a way to fix it up.
I discovered that the Dynamics audio filter when added with the ‘noise gate’ option did a wonder at decreasing the reverb. When I put a nice instrumental piece of music underneath, it sounded great!
